Blessed Pope John XXIII Academy has a strong Athletic Program in Soccer and Basketball. We are members of the GIL (Grammar Independent League) Athletic League which is comprised of 12 Catholic grammar schools primarily from Essex County. The League’s objective is to create a Christian, competitive, and sportsman-like environment for all the participating schools, students, athletes, and fans.
Blessed Pope John XXIII Academy players are known as The Cardinals and must agree to:
+ make their best effort to attend all practices and games
+ notify the coach as soon as possible if they cannot attend a game or practice
+ continue to do their best to do schoolwork, homework, and study for tests during the athletic season
+ abide by all the rules in the BPJ Student Handbook on and off the field
+ treat all coaches, officials, and players with the highest level of respect
The Athletic program at BPJ is built upon teamwork and sportsmanship. We expect student athletes to take responsibility for themselves and their actions. Our players should always represent Blessed Pope John XXIII Academy in a positive manner. This means being on time in a clean well kept uniform, and respecting the property of the gyms in which they play.
There is a ”no cut” policy at BPJ. All students who want to play a sport may do so. We make every effort to let everyone play in every game. However, we are in a competitive league, and if the score is close, some inexperienced players may get less time in that particular game. We do our best to allow more time for those players in subsequent games.

(received by Principal Wright via email)
Mrs. Wright,
I am the coach of St. Peter’s School Soccer Team. I wanted to just tell you about 2 quality individuals on your team, Alex and Sergio. I got to know them a few weeks ago when they were waiting for a ride after our game. I saw them and spoke with them again the next day after they played Good Shepherd.
After the game last night, which your team won by the way, they waited for the chaos to die down and came up to me individually to shake my hand and speak to me about the game. It was such a touch of sportsmanship and class that I could not let it go untold. These are qualities I try to instill on my players and I am glad when I see it in others.
I wish your team and Coach Joe the best of luck in the rest of the playoffs.
Sincerely,
Charles Hood
